Streaky Bay Information

Streaky Bay in South Australia is a coastal town with a population of about 1,500 people. The main industries include farming, fishing and tourism. Streaky Bay was named by Matthew Flinders in 1802 that noticed discoloured streaks in the water in the area. The town was first settled as a pastoral community and in 1872 was officially proclaimed.

Tourism is a growing industry in Streaky Bay with the summer months seeing the town swell significantly in numbers as people flock to enjoy their holiday on the coast. The biggest drawcard in visitors coming to the area is fishing, diving, surfing, snorkelling and nature hiking.

A natural attraction well worth seeing in the area is Murphy’s Haystacks, which is located between the town of Streaky Bay and Port Kenny. The rock formations were named after a farmer Murphy who grew hay in the area.

The Streaky Bay National Trust Museum in Montgomerie Terrace is a great place to visit and is open Tuesdays and Fridays from 2-4pm. The museum showcases historical artefacts and comes complete with three display rooms from the Kelsh family dating back to 1886.

Another great museum is the Powerhouse Museum Which features restored engines some being over 100 years old. There are also mini tractors as used in the pioneering days.

Fishing is extremely popular in the area and the Streaky Bay Jetty is a hot spot for anglers with plenty of good whiting, salmon, trevally, squid, flathead and Mulloway to catch. There are also ample of good deep-sea charters available for the larger fish.

The annual Streaky Bay Cup horserace is held every year at the end of March and is well worth attending. During the year, there are occasional times when the township race horses along the beach.
