Woomera Information

Woomera in South Australia is a small town with a population of about 400 people. It was established in 1947 as an Australian Defence Force base and became a testing area for rockets and missiles during the cold war era. The name Woomera was chosen, as it is the name of an Aboriginal spear-throwing implement.

One of the biggest attractions to Woomera is Aerospace Missile Park located in the centre of town. The park features missiles, rockets and planes that were developed and tested in Woomera over the last 60 years. The park also contains a museum that houses the history of Woomera from its very beginning.

The Woomera Observatory is a favourite place to see for anyone interested in astronomy. The Observatory was built in 2007 and houses a 14-inch computer controlled telescope for stargazing.

Another great attraction is the Woomera Marine Centre also located in the middle of town. Stuart Knox came up with the idea to build a marine centre which is an iatrical part of Woomera’s school programme for learning aquaculture and marine studies.

During the summer months from October to Anzac Day, the Woomera Swimming Pool complex is popular with locals and tourists. The complex features a 25-metre pool and a 1-metre diving board.

The Woomera Golf Club located on Technical Area Road is another great activity in town. The club holds a competition every Sunday and the golf course is unique as most of the course is played on red dirt except for the tee off and putting greens.

Woomera features three great monuments of significance. The Obelisk, Len Beadell Memorial and the National Engineering Landmark. All are worth seeing and highlight the history of Woomera.
