Arthur River Information
Arthur River in Tasmania is a very small township and popular tourist destination. The town is named after the river and Arthur River was once exploited for timber fishing in the early years of settlement.
There is a plaque at Gardiner Point at the mouth of the river titled The Edge of the World, North West Coast Tasmania. The plaque features a poem by Brian Inder a tourism pioneer which refers to the coastline and the strong gales of the roaring forties which is the name given by sailors to the strong westerly winds.
Environmental lovers will enjoy Arthur River for the pristine Tasmanian wilderness and dense forest, which provides a wonderful eco tourism holiday adventure. A stroll through the forest gives the perfect scenery to enjoy giant fern trees, eucalyptus, blackwood, laurels, myrtles, pine, wattle and other exotic trees. Alternatively experience the scenery by enjoying a river cruise or go canoeing down the river.
The Arthur-Pieman Protected Area is another fantastic place to explore and enjoy bird watching at its best. There are spectacular arrays of orange-breasted parrots, black cockatoos, black jays, herons, Tasmanian rosellas, azure kingfishers and wedge-tailed eagles to admire. 4WD tours are available which will take you to some great hidden and magical spots. There are also plenty of facilities like barbecues and camping grounds in the area.
Fishing highly recommended when visiting. Many travellers and tourists come from far away to enjoy some of the best fishing in Tasmania that Arthur River offers. During November to April the Salmon are particularly excellent in numbers and Trout can be caught all round.
For beach and ocean enjoyment a great day trip not far away is Marrawah situated slightly north. There are some excellent swells and waves at Marrawah which provide some of the best surfing action in all of Tasmania.
