Bicheno Information
Bicheno in Tasmania is a small town with about 700 residents. Primarily it is a fishing port and a coastal Beach town with beach resorts. The town was named after James Ebenezer Bicheno the British Colonial Secretary.
Fishing enthusiasts are advised to put Bicheno on their Holiday itinerary, as there are heaps of fish to catch in the area either on land or charter boat.
Just 200 meters offshore Bicheno lays Governor Island. These two islands are unique as they are only about 2 hectares in size and made of granite. The islands are part of a nature reserve and are an important breeding ground for the Rookery sea bird.
Governor Island also has some of the best diving spots in Australia where you will see plenty of rock lobsters, Butterfly Perch, fish and the Weedy Seadragon (Phyllopteryx taeniolatus). The reserve is jointly managed by the Parks & Wildlife Service and Marine Resources.
Nature lovers will enjoy the splendour of nearby Diamond Island to the north of Bicheno. The island is home to fairy penguins, which are adorable and remarkable birds in their own environment. To the south of town lies Rocking Rock & Blowhole. Rocking Rock is an 80 tonne piece of granite that rocks with the movement of the tide.
Visit the Bicheno Golf Course. Located just five minutes north the challenging 9-hole golf course is adjacent to the beach and is surrounded with beautiful scenery for you to enjoy on your game.
East Coast Natureworld should be another great discovery on your holiday. One of Tasmania’s premier wildlife parks which offers the opportunity for you to see local wildlife. It is the best place for you to see the Tasmania Devil.
