Devonport Information

Devonport in Tasmania is at the mouth of the Mersey River and Tasmania’s third largest city. It is also well known at the port for the Spirit of Tasmania ferry that operates to transport passengers to and from the island to mainland Australia .It is also knick named the Bass strait Ferry as it crosses the Bass strait waters.

Devonport was declared a city in 1823 and has a population of about 23,000 people. Devonport also has an airport where Tas air regional airlines operate between Devonport and King Island, which is a popular tourist destination for a great weekend getaway.

An interesting fact is that Devonport is surrounded by fertile soil, which is ideal for the production of vegetable crops. Out of all crops grown on Tasmania 40% of the produce originates from the Devonport surrounding areas.

The most popular spot to go swimming is at Coles Beach near Mersey Bluff Reserve. There are also many cycle pathways and nature walks for you to enjoy the perfect tranquillity of your relaxing holiday getaway.

Fishing is also a popular activity and there are plenty of great hot spots from ocean to river fishing. Along the riverbanks you can also enjoy the wildlife and scenery especially bird watching for some great eco tourism adventure.

The Devonport Maritime Museum and Historical Society is a must when visiting Devonport. The Museum was first opened in 1973 and located on the mouth of the Mersey River near the Devonport cricket club. It holds a spectacular collection of photo’s, artefacts and model ships, which display the history of the area.

Another thing not to miss is exploring the Tiagarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre in Mersey Bluff. Here you can wander the Bluff headland and see the unique aboriginal rock engraving featuring the life of the tribal Tasmanian Aborigines.
