George Town Information

George Town is a large town in Tasmania located on the Tamar River with a population of about 7,000 people. Tourism plays a big part to George Towns economy particularly in summer months.

There is plenty of history to Georgetown as it is the third oldest settlement in Australia and was established in 1084. There are some fantastic heritage buildings to see and experience in George Town, especially The Grove and The Watch House Museum. The Low Head Pilot Station is another great attraction for maritime history as it was built in 1805 by convicts and is still in use today.

The Name George town originates from King George III who the township was named after by Governor Lachlan Macquarie. It was once the administrative headquarters for convicts before Launceston was established.

While staying in George Town a great attraction not to miss is the Low Head Penguin Tour. Low Head is located just 6kms north of George Town on the mouth of the Tamar River peninsula. Tours run every night after sunset, which provides a great eco tour adventure. The Little Penguins can be seen in abundance and the tour guide is sure to share with you some very interesting facts.

The surrounding areas of George Town in the Tamar Valley also host fantastic rural places to see. The Tamar Valley is one of the oldest wine producing regions in Tasmania and there are plenty of wineries and orchids to that make the perfect day out for a lunch or picnic. There are also some great four-wheel drive tours to take you off the beat and track for some great sightseeing.

Fishing on the Tamar River is also very popular. There are plenty of places to fish and some of the best catches include flathead, snapper, mackerel, salmon, cod and sea runners. You may also want to try squid jigging, as there are some great squid to catch.
