Hobart Information
Hobart is the capital city of Tasmania and was founded in 1803 as a penal colony. Hobart is also the second oldest capital city in Australia with a population of about 230,000 people. The city is located on the Derwent River which is also the home port for both French and Australian Antarctic operations.
A noticeable feature dominating Hobart is the backdrop of nearby Mount Wellington which is some 1,200 meters high. Hobart was named after Lord Hobarton the colonial secretary of the first fleet.
Well worth a visit is the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, which are located just a short distance from the city centre. Here you will find 35 acres of pristine gardens established in 1818. Nature lovers will enjoy the wonderful settings of the gardens, which host Tasmanian plants as well as the world’s only subantarctic plant house.
Another not to miss activity is the Salamanca Place Markets, which happen every Saturday. The marketplace was named after the Battle of Salamanca in the Spanish province of Salamanca. Tourists and travellers will find them very popular with plenty to offer like fresh produce, gifts, bars, eateries, shops, cafés and restaurants.
The Wrest Point Casino located in Sandy Bay is Australia’s first ever casino established in 1973. Hobart also hosts the oldest and first theatre, the famous Theatre Royal that has some fantastic events and musicals happening all year round. Apparently residents have reported a ghost of a former actor that still sometimes appears at the Theatre Royal.
Hobart is internationally known for the famous Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, which is held every year on Boxing Day. Another great event to see is the Tasmanian National Jaguar Rally. Held every year in April the show starts with a magnificent display of Jaguar cars from the early 1950’s to present. It is held Easter long weekend on the doorstep of Parliament House.
