Latrobe Information

Latrobe in Tasmania is a town situated on the Mersey River with a population of about 5,000 people. B. B. Thomas first settled the area in 1826 and the town was named after Charles Joseph Latrobe the former administrator of the colony of Tasmania.

Holidaymakers to Latrobe can experience plenty of history and tranquillity as the township has plenty to do and see. For a great activity try the Sheehan Walk and Memorial, which is a tribute to a Latrobe local hero after whom a Collins Class Submarine, HMAS Sheehan, is named. The 3km walk details conflicts and peacekeeping activities in which Australia has been involved.

The Court House Museum at Post Office Reserve is another great icon in town. The museum highlights the history and tells the story of European settlement to the area. Along with the museum, nearby at Bells Parade you will find the Axeman’s Hall of Fame. The hall of fame portrays the achievement and history of Australian woodchoppers.

Sherwood hall is another great place to see which is a restored colonial home of 1850's pioneers Thomas Johnson (ex-convict) and Dolly Dalrymple Briggs (part-aboriginal). Sherwood Hall is believed to be the oldest house in Latrobe, built between 1848-1850 by Thomas Johnson, a pioneer and settler who began life in Van Dieman's Land as a convict and his wife Dolly Dalrymple Briggs, the first part aboriginal.

For something totally different, Latrobe features the Quiet Cone. The Cone is designed to offer peace and tranquility to all who visit it and people who appreciate meditation should make this place their first stop on the discovery of Latrobe.

Chocolate lovers will enjoy the House of Anvers Chocolate Factory. Here you can delight yourself in hand made chocolate treats with everything ranging from chocolates, truffles and fudges to chocolate liqueurs.
