Launceston Information
Launceston in Tasmania is the second largest city in Tasmania and the nations third oldest city with a population of more than 100,000 people. It was settled in 1806 and lies on the juncture of the North Esk, South Esk and Tamar river. Launceston is one of the oldest cities in Australia with many historical Victorian buildings and a great place to visit on your holiday in Tasmania.
The University of Tasmania and Australian Maritime College are located in Launceston. It also is a major hub for regional agricultural and pastoral activities including the wool industry. Tourism plays a major part in the economy of Launceston and most years attracts more than 400,000 visitors per year.
The Cataract Gorge is the jewel of Launceston’s largest tourist attraction. The King’s Bridge-Cataract Walk is very popular and the chairlift crossing the gorge is the longest single span chairlift in the world.
Launceston is also home to the Tasmania Zoo. Here 900 acres of native bushland have been transformed into the states largest Zoo which house plenty of local wildlife including the famous Tasmanian Devils.
The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery located in Launceston is one of Australia’s largest museums and a place to visit. Established in 1891 it has a reputation for its exhibition collection of Colonial Art, craft and design of Tasmanian history. It also houses an exhibition of a full Chinese temple.
Launceston is also home to the famous Boag’s Beer. Beer lovers will enjoy the tour of the Boag’s Centre for Beer Lovers. The tours include a full circuit from brewery to beer house and include free beer tasting.
