Ross Information
Ross in Tasmania is a small historic town situated on the Macquarie River. The township is recognised for its historic bridge and the many convict built buildings. In the 1840’s and 50’s Ross was an important garrison for female convicts.
The construction of a stone built bridge in Ross made the town a very important transit point between Hobart and Launceston in early years. In the early 1900’s Ross then became more widely known as a fine wool-growing district.
Ross has three historic churches and all three are worth visiting. The Uniting Church is most popular and was built in 1885, set on the hilltop over the Ross River Bridge, which is Australia’s third oldest bridge still in use. The Roman Catholic Church built in the 1920’s and is another great church to see made famous for its Gothic revival style. Lastly the St John’s Anglican Church built in 1868 is amazing to see for its 100-year-old pipe organ.
Another great place to visit in Ross is the former Army Orderly Room and Colonial Building. Once the army headquarters it was built in 1836 and now houses the Ross Memorial Library, which has some fantastic history to discover. Nearby is also the Council Clerk’s cottage with amazing Georgian heritage and incorporates the former police buildings.
The Tasmanian Wool Centre Museum located in Church Street is well worth a visit too. The Museum showcases the early life in Ross and houses a wool exhibition, which outlines the importance of the wool industry. There are video and audio displays to see and it is open daily.
Whatever you do don’t miss the four corners of Ross being Temptation (Man O Ross Hotel), Recreation (Town Hall) , Salvation(Roman Catholic Church) and Damnation (Original Goal and now a private residence). All showcase some of the best heritage in Tasmania.
