Sheffield Information
Sheffield in Tasmania is the rural hub of the Mount Roland area. The region is well known for its dairy farming and produces some of the best quality butter products in Australia. The township was settled in 1859 and has a current population of about 1,500 people.
Edward Curr an early settler to the region named the area after his hometown Sheffield, South Yorkshire in England. Although being a small town Sheffield is a very popular tourist destination and attracts some 100,000 people every year that come to the many murals scattered throughout the town.
More appreciation for the arts can be seen in the centre of town where there are a number of art studios which are open to the public and visitors can enjoy watching artists go about their work. Every year in April the Wilderness Gallery Mural Festival is held which is a must see event.
Another great place to see in Sheffield is the Kentish Museum. The museum boasts history and artefacts that date back to the original settlement and include everything from farm machinery to pioneer household effects including historical photographs and newspapers.
There are also plenty of natural attractions, which draw tourists to Sheffield. Mt Roland, which is situated between Sheffield and Cradle Mountain, is one such example. Standing at 1,200 meters above sea level the mountain provides a very spectacular backdrop view. There are two walking tracks that lead to the summit which provide the perfect eco adventure.
Some holiday fun can be found nearby at Tasmazia, which is located just 15 minutes from Sheffield. There are 8 beautiful mazes to explore making Tasmazia the largest maze complex in the world. Not only are the mazes fun for all ages but there are some fascinating miniature sized villages such as Cubby Town that make the experience worthwhile.
