St Marys Information
St Marys in Tasmania is a small tourist town with a population of about 600 people. Entrenched in history the first settlers came when Captain Tobias Furneaux sighted the nearby St Patrick’s Head Mountain in 1773. It wasn’t until the 1840’s however that the region became a probation station housing 300 convicts and in later years a railway was built in 1866 increasing the importance of the town.
Although there is only a small population of permanent residents in St Marys town the area has a significant tourism influence in particular with rock climbers who come to climb the challenging St Patrick’s Head Mountain.
Even if you can’t rock climb any nature enthusiast will be thrilled with the magnificent wildlife and nature that the nearby areas of St Marys has to offer. There are fantastic waterfalls and plenty of bushwalking trails to discover and if you love fishing the nearby Lake Leake has you covered.
Two of the most popular must see places when visiting include the St Patrick’s Head and the South Sister Peak. Both are easily accessible via roads and the spectacular views are well worth taking the time to see.
Another great attraction to see is the Christ Church found a few kilometres west of town. The Church stands in the middle of the fields on a large property of “Cullenswood” and was established in the late 1920’s.
In the centre of town the St Marys Golf Course is another great hit for the golfing enthusiast. The course is unique as the layout encompasses the use of the local horse track, Footy and cricket oval and the town’s lawn bowl greens. One beautiful aspect to the course is that you get to soak in the splendour of the picturesque views of St Patrick Heads in the backdrop.
