Strahan Information
Strahan in Tasmania is former port, which is a hot tourism destination. The port was originally developed as an access point for mining settlements and the timber industry in the early twentieth century.
Historically Strahan was also a port for the fishing fleets that dared to adventure the Hell’s Gates. Hell’s Gates was names after the Lieutenant-Governor of Tasmania William Sorell and is a notoriously dangerous channel and entrance to the harbour in Strahan. The mainland around Strahan is known as Cape Sorell, which serves well for farming.
At one point in history the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company exported mining materials out of Hells Gates and Macquarie Heads. The Horse drawn tramline travelled between the lighthouse and the jetty and wharf for its exports.
A great icon to visit is the Cape Sorell Lighthouse, which was an orientation point for boats entering and leaving the area of Macquarie Heads and through Hell’s Gates. The Lighthouse is 51 meters above sea level.
Golfing enthusiasts will love the Strahan Golf Club. The nine-hole course features well kept gardens with some challenging hazards.
Strahan is also a destination point the West Coast Wilderness Railway. The Railway is a must travel on experience as the beautiful views will leave you breathless.
Another great activity to do in Strahan is a cruise on the Macquarie Harbour then down the world famous and heritage listed Gordon River. The mirror like waters are spectacular and provide the perfect picturesque scenery. The cruise will also take you on the discovery of the notorious Sarah Island, which was once the site of perhaps Australia’s harshest and former feared penal colony.
