Swansea Information
Swansea in Tasmania is a small town with a population of about 600 people and was settled in 1821 when George Meredith and his family adopted Swansea as their home.
Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy Swansea for the mutton-birds and fairy penguins that are abundant in the area. Swansea is also located in Great Oyster Bay, which is a broad sheltered bay that opens to the Tasman Sea. Over the bay you can see the rugged mountains of the Freycinet National Park and the area provides the perfect holiday scenery.
An interesting fact of Swansea is that the town has the highest population per capita in Tasmania of people aged 65-year old and above. It is therefore the perfect place to travel to for a nice quiet relaxing holiday.
The best swimming beaches in Swansea are Cressy, Coswell and Mayfield beach. Another great beach to see is Kelvedon Beach, which is an 8-kilometre picture perfect beach with magnificent views and an area to visit, as you will see the fairy penguins in action.
Mayfield Bay Coastal Reserve is another hot spot. The coastal reserve offers fantastic swimming, camping, fishing, surfing and diving. Just outside Mayfield Bay you can see the Spiky Bridge a convict built structure built in the 1840’s. Spiky Bridge gets its name from the appearance as the spikes prevented cattle form falling over the side.
For golfing enthusiasts the Swansea Golf Club is located at Waterloo Point. The Scenic 9-hole golf course has breathtaking views across Oyster Bay and the distant Freycinet Peninsula.
A great place to stay at nearby Swansea is the Avalon Coastal Retreat just a short 10-minute drive from Swansea.
