Ulverstone Information

Ulverstone in Tasmania is a town centrally situated between Burnie and Devonport on the Leven River. The town has a moderate size population of about 10,000 people.

The township was first settled in 1840 by James Fenton and grew very rapidly when in 1890 a railway reached the town and the timber industry thrived in the area. Today Ulverstone is more of an agricultural and tourism town.

As Ulverstone is relatively large in size there are plenty of shops, malls, supermarkets and specialty places for your holiday shopping. Local attractions include the wharf, nearby farms and the beach. Swimming on the beaches is popular and there is even a waterslide for your enjoyment.

Fishing is also wonderful in Ulverstone with some great beach fishing and fantastic river and estuary fishing spots on the Leven River. Boating is also an exhilarating and it is well worth taking a charter boat or ferry to explore the area better.

Another great attraction is the Ulverstone History Museum. The museum houses a variety of artefacts and displays many of which have significant history to the township of Ulverstone. There are also totally recreated shops that with their stylish history make you feel like you have gone back in time.

Golfing enthusiasts will also enjoy the Ulverstone Golf Club which features a spectacular 18 hole, 6104 metre long Par 72 course. The Championship golf course is set amongst wonderful scenery of tall eucalyptus trees. The course is said to be one of the most picturesque sporting venues in Tasmania and incorporates a very challenging layout.

For a wonderful picnic, visit the Gunns Plains which is a scenic farming area just outside Ulverstone. Gunns Plains also has plenty of vineyards and dairy farms to see along with the Tasmanian Reptile Centre and Wing’s Farm Park.
