Westbury Information
Westbury in Tasmania is a small town with a population of about 1,500 people and was established in 1828 as a garrison village. The town originates its name from Westbury, Wiltshire in England. Today Westbury is a major region producing poppies for the processing of pharmaceutical products.
For tourists Westbury is a unique holiday destination. There are many heritage buildings surrounded by some stunning scenery to discover. Every year Westbury hosts the St Patricks Festival which celebrates the town’s history and ties with the Celtic Irish community.
A great local tourist attraction is Pearn’s Steam World which houses a collection of over 200 historic items. Many of the items relate back to the Pearn family agricultural business that operated in the district for over 80 years. The most amazing and definitely a crowd pleaser are the miniature steam tractors which today are a rare collector’s item.
The Westbury Maze and Tearoom is another great place to see. The maze is fairly complex and more than a kilometre long to provide the perfect holiday challenge and experience. Once you find your way through the maze the tea rooms provide the perfect dining experience in an alfresco courtyard.
Environmental lovers will enjoy the Westbury Culzean Gardens. The centrepiece of the garden is a beautiful lake which is almost 3 acres in size. The Culzean gardens are perfect to visit all year round as in summer there are water lilies, spring daffodils and winter beautiful roses in bloom. At the Gardens there is also a beautiful heritage Anglo-Indian style building built back in 1841.
Another great place not to miss is the White House Museum. The White House building tells an interesting story of a convict named Thomas White who became a storekeeper. The museum contains an extensive collection of memorabilia with plenty of history.
