Ararat Information
Ararat, based in the south west of Victoria approx 200 kms west of Melbourne is the largest town in the government area known as the Rural City of Ararat. With a population of approx 8220, it is the ideal base for exploring the Grampian National Park region, the Pyrenees Ranges and Mt Cole, Mt Buangor and Mt Langi Ghiran.
A former gold mining town, the area is a rich Pastoral, Wine and Fruit Growing region with a wealth of historical buildings and interests, including the Town Hall and Shire Hall in Barkly Street, both dating back to the 1800’s.
Some of the main areas of interest are the Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre, the Langi Morgala Museum and J Ward, the original County Gaol and more recently an institution for the criminally insane until its closure in 1991.
There are numerous local wineries in the area supplying some of the finest Victorian wines.
Ararat visitors are spoilt for attractions with the regional Art Gallery, Railway Heritage Museum and various festivals including the Golden Gateway Festival, A Day on the Green, the Ararat Orchid Show and the Jailhouse Rock Festival.
A short drive North West is the One Tree Hill Lookout, giving superb views of the ranges surrounding the region. Ararat also houses the not to be missed Alexandra Botanical Gardens with a plethora of local indigenous and exotic Flora and Fauna.
You can stay in the town and savour the surrounding beauty with trips to the Buangor State Park eucalyptus forests or the exquisite Granite Formations of the Langi Ghiran State Park.
