Avoca Information

Avoca is one of the main towns in the Pyrenees Shire situated in the Central Highlands of Victoria. The town stands in the basin of the Avoca River, bordered by the Pyrenees Ranges to the west, the Great Dividing Ranges to the south and the great plains of the Wimmera at its north.

As with most central towns in Victoria, Avoca came to prominence with the gold rush and moved quickly into Agriculture and Farming.

Although only populated by about 950 people, the town has plenty to offer with some of the most picturesque countryside, where trails criss-cross the ranges and Walking, Hiking and Mountain bikes can explore the amazing landscape.

In the high street you will find the Soldiers Memorial. Built in 1921 and locally recognised as the symbol of the town, the Memorial represents Avoca’s remembrance to their soldiers who gave their lives during the First World War.

For those who prefer to watch their sport, the Avoca Shire Turf Club is steeped in history and the Avoca cup has been around two years longer than the Melbourne cup.

The Riding club, based in the Avoca Racecourse Reserve, offers scenic trail rides and instruction in Dressage and Jumping.

The town also hosts the annual 100k Pyrenees charity bike ride with approx 150 riders taking part each year.

You can play tennis at the local club or try your hand at the old French game of Petanque. Alternatively, you can base yourself in this beautiful town and travel out in almost any direction to some of the most exhilarating scenic views in Australia.

The town is generally known as the gateway to the Pyrenees wine region and with a drive in the tourism industry, this rural community is becoming one of the gems in Victoria’s crown.
