Bairnsdale Information

Bairnsdale is a small city in Victoria with a population of almost 11,300 built on the river flats of the Mitchell River. Located 285 kilometres east of Melbourne on the Princes Highway, the city stands as the gateway to the Gippsland Rivers, Lakes, Beaches, Snowfields and Mountains and is the perfect setting to explore the attractions and activities of the area.

As the only designated city in East Gippsland, Bairnsdale’s Commercial significance is only surpassed by its attraction as a Romantic destination. You can walk, cycle or take a horse for a canter along the Gippsland Rail Trail, visit the Mitchell River National Park for Kayaking or Canoeing or for the less active visitor, take a 4WD tour into the Alpine regions of Mount Hotham and Omeo.

Bairnsdale is also steeped in Culture and History. One of the main attractions in the city is St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church where the wall and ceiling murals, painted by Italian artist Francesco Floreani, remain one of the major tourist attractions to this day.

The Aboriginal name for the city is Wy Yung, meaning Spoonbill, a type of wading bird found throughout the marsh areas of the Mitchell Delta where it meets King Lake. The significance of this area is immense, not only for the bird lovers, with over 130 species of water birds, but the Silt Jetties are second only to the ones at the formation of the Mississippi River in the USA.

The rivers and lakes offer excellent fishing and the proximity to 90 Mile Beach is perfect for the surfing fraternity.

Other attractions include the Agricultural and Craft shows, Music festivals, sporting events such as Motocross and Horse Racing, Dance Competitions, Scenic flights and Parachuting for the fearless. Discover Antiques and Art Galleries or view the historical artefacts of the Kurnai or Gunai people of East Gippsland. Alternatively, relax along the 4 kilometres median strip of gardens that stretch along the main street.
