Bendigo Information
Bendigo is the second largest inland city in Victoria with a population of close to 100,000 people. The town derives its name from Bendigo Creek. Bendigo grew very significantly in the Victorian Gold Rush days and is most notable in name for being the home to the famous Bendigo Bank.
Bendigo was first established in 1851 and was originally occupied by the Dja Dja Wrung Aboriginal people. Mining and gold discovery led to the quick growth and it was once the scene of a massive protest against the gold licence fee introduced by the government to capitalise on people mining for gold.
Mining in Bendigo and surrounding areas is still massive today with Bendigo Mining NL producing thousands of ounces of gold every year. This also makes visiting a mine tour one of the most prominent attraction when holidaying in Bendigo.
Tourism is rife in Bendigo with many magnificent heritage buildings all over town to see. The Bendigo Gold Museum is another great activity for any holidaymaker and the museum showcases the gold history from pioneering days to present including a great gold collection and memorabilia.
The Bendigo Art Gallery is another great place to visit and was first established in 1887. This makes it one of the oldest galleries in Australia housing some great artworks including European art from the early 1800’s. The art gallery is located at 42 View Street, Ballarat.
There are heaps of other museums to discover in Bendigo and some other great ones are the Ballarat Tramway Museum, the Golden City Paddle Steamer Museum, Ballarat Aviation museum and the Kirrit Barreet Aboriginal Art & Cultural Centre.
Apart from Ballarat art, museum, mining or history there is another hidden little gem to discover, which is Ballarat Wildlife Park. The wildlife park features heaps of wildlife including Koala photography.
