Bright Information
Bright is a small township at the south east section of Ovens Valley in the Victorian Alps region. Situated 319 metres above sea level with a population of approx 2,700, the area is fast becoming one of the main tourist attractions in the region.
Steeped in history after the Victorian gold rush and subsequent Buckland Riot in 1857 between the Anglo-Irish Miners and Chinese Prospectors resulted in numerous deaths and the exodus of the Chinese miners.
Bright is one of the regions main Paragliding centres boasting numerous launch sites and Paragliding festivals and competitions. There is nothing quite like soaring hundreds of feet in the air over some of the most stunning countryside and mountain ranges in the southern hemisphere.
For nature lovers, there are a large number of trails and paths where you may encounter the Duck Billed Platypus, as well as Fish, Yabbies and Amphibians in their natural habitat. Whist overhead, you will see Wagtails, Magpies, Cockatoos and the wonderful cackling calls of the Kookaburras, and if you keep your senses keen, you may even see the Wombats, skirmishing within 300 metres of the town.
Bike tracks criss-cross the area around the town and cater for the novice to the technically competent mountain bikers and even the road racers with the 200km Alpine Classic run to Falls Creek and back to Mount Buffalo.
Bright’s local attractions also include Wineries, Orchards, Historic Sites and Restaurants with views of the majestic mountain scenery.
The town is close to the two highest peaks in Victoria, Mount Bogong and Mount Feathertop, with national parks spread throughout the region. The Aboriginal tribes, legally accepted as the natural land owners, converge on the Alps in the summer for their ceremonies and to gather the nutritious Bogong Moth that take shelter in the high country.
