Castlemaine Information
Castlemaine in Victoria is a small city with a population of around 9,000 people. The city was established in 1851 during the Victorian gold rush and before European settlement the Dja Dja Wurrung Aboriginal people occupied the area.
A great attraction to Castlemaine is the Buda Historic Home and garden. Built in 1861, the home was occupied by the Ernest Leviny family and is fully restored with furnishings dating back to the original owners.
Australian art and historical items can be seen at the Castlemaine Art Gallery and Historical Museum. Here you will find some of Australia’s best works of art dating back to the Edwardian times. There is also an extensive collection of historical items relating to the Mount Alexander goldfields district.
For entertainment in Castlemaine the best place to visit is the Theatre Royal, which is one of Australia’s longest running mainland theatres. The theatre first opened in 1854 which gives it over 150 years of history. There are always various performances and films for your enjoyment.
Nature lovers will also enjoy viewing the Skydancers Butterfly Sanctuary in Castlemaine. The sanctuary includes orchids and native plants set in a wonderful nursery where some of Australia’s most beautiful butterflies live.
A great day trip is to experience the Victorian Goldfields Railway. The train still operates on steam and will take you on a great sightseeing tour through Castlemaine, Maldon and the Box-Iron Bark forest region, which was once the richest gold mining region in the gold rush era.
Nearby Castlemaine in Chewton you will discover the Jirrahlinga Koala Wildlife Sanctuary that is dedicated to the conservation of the Australian native dingo. The dingo is Australia’s unique wild dog and since numbers are rapidly declining travellers should visit for support.
