Eildon Information
Eildon is a small town in Victoria approx 140km northeast of Melbourne in the shire of Murrindindi. Located close to Lake Eildon, with a population of about 1,200 and set in the Goulburn Valley, the town built a reputation as the water playground of the state.
The lake is a man made reservoir that can hold six times the amount of much water as Sydney Harbour and is the second largest water storage area in Victoria. Eildon is situated at the deepest part of the lake where you can lower your boat from the public ramps at Jerusalem Creek or Eildon (Fraser) National Park and cruise the still waters.
You can also go water skiing on the lake and for those into angling; Eildon is great spot for catching Trout, Murray Cod, Yellowbelly and Redfin. In fact, the Eildon Pondage is the trophy trout capital of Australia with many Brown and Rainbow trout landed weighing over 5 kgs.
A visit to the nearby Eildon National Park is definitely worth a visit. A mountainous region with open Eucalyptus forests, butting the edge of 380 million year old volcano, the park is really two parks, the massive Fraser national Park and the state forest next to the lake known as Eildon State Park.
For nature lovers, camping is the best way to get close to the local creatures including reptiles, birds, 10 different species of amphibians and the wonderful Eastern Grey Kangaroo.
Close by, you can take in a game of golf; the local course is wonderful par 69 semi-private club, about 6kms from the lake.
There is a Tennis court close by for the budding Leyton Hewitts and a Bowling club for those more sedate afternoons when the adventurous side decides it needs a rest.
You can mountain bike through the valley, indulge in the Flora and Fauna, visit the relics of the old Victorian Gold Rush era or simply relax and take in the beauty.
