Geelong Information
Geelong in Victoria is the second largest city in Victoria with a population of about 200,000 people. Geelong gets its name from the aboriginal word Jillong which translated means “land or cliffs”.
In March 1936 Geelong was first settled by three squatters and when gold was discovered in Ballarat in 1851 Geelong’s population grew very significantly due to the gold rush. By 1910 and on the 8th December Geelong was officially declared a city as its population has swelled to over 30,000 people.
Today Geelong is famous for being home to Ford Australian Motor Vehicle Company. It is also home to the Geelong football club and one of the many notable celebrities who came from Geelong is the world famous Mr Papparazzi Man Darryn Lyons.
The Geelong Heritage Centre is a great attraction for history and heritage. The centre includes a very large archive on the history and memorabilia dating back to the foundation of the city. Another great place is the Australian Wool Museum. The museum highlights the history of the wool industry and there is even a local farmer who will demonstrate sheep shearing.
For nature lovers the city also contains the Geelong Botanic Gardens for the perfect eco adventure with plenty of different plants and wildlife in the area to discover. Centrally in the Botanic Gardens is the Friends Tea House which is very popular with local residents and tourists alike.
The stunning waterfront of Geelong is another great place to discover as it is buzzing with activity and attractions. Here you will find some very interesting bollards artistic and unique to the Geelong area. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes and interesting shops to discover.
