Hamilton Information

Hamilton is a mid sized town in Western Victoria. With a population of approx 9,400 the area has a vast Pastoral region which encouraged the growth of sheep farming to the area giving Hamilton its claim as the Wool Capital of the World.

Early settlers to the region found it fertile and well watered with an abundance of wildlife. This natural area bordered three indigenous lands. Given the natural abundance of food and water and due to the aboriginal settlements rather than nomadic tribes, there was major conflict with white settlers to the region.

One of the greatest attractions is the Hamilton Botanic Gardens, designed in 1881 by William Guilfoyle the then director of the Royal Botanical Gardens in Melbourne, the gardens house some of the rarest botanical species in the area and includes a small zoo, the wonderfully ornate Thomson Fountain along with several trees listed on the Register of Significant trees in Victoria after the gardens were classified by The National Trust of Australia in 1990.

There are many attractions linked to the importance of the wool industry in the town, such as The Big Wool Bales – five linked structures resembling gigantic wool bales. There is also the annual Sheepvention trade show.

The town boasts ample facilities for the tourist, with two golf courses, Hamilton horse racing club, a huge indoor sports and aquatic centre, with field hockey, basketball, tennis and cricket for the sporty types.

For the water lovers, you can try your hand at rowing; Hamilton is home to two of the top rowing clubs in the region.

The area also houses numerous wildlife parks, home to the Eastern Barred Bandicoot and reserves protecting endangered species from the area and with Mount Napier situated 15km south of the town, there are ample hiking and bike trails through the region to see nature at its finest.
