Healesville Information
Healesville in Victoria is a town with a population of about 8,000 people. It is located on the Watts River in the Yarra Valley. The township was settled in 1864 and is today well known for the Healesville Sanctuary wildlife nature park.
Healesville Sanctuary contains more than 200 species of Australian wildlife and is one of Australia’s most acclaimed and best sanctuaries. Dr Colin Mackenzie originally founded it in 1921 after he received 70 acres of land in the region for medical research from the government. Today the sanctuary is at the forefront in Australian conservation and preservation of wildlife.
A different kind of tourist attraction for some fun and entertainment on your holiday is the Hedgend Maze. The maze is 1.2 kilometres in size and is created in some very beautiful surrounding countryside. There is also a secondary maze called the rainbow, which will require skill and patience. If you are driving around in circles and looking for the mazes they are located at 163 Albert Road in Healesville.
Healesville is also famous for being a fantastic grape growing region. There are several wineries and fruit farms to see on your holiday. One of the best wineries is Giant Steps innocent bystander winery. The wine tour available by Giant Steps has been widely described by some as the “Mecca of all things great”. The winery has become so popular that they even now have an online shop for your enjoyment.
Another great attraction to Healesville is the Yarra Valley Railway. The railway has won several tourism awards and is a great way to explore Healesville and the surrounding areas.
There are also various art galleries to discover in Healesville with the prominent being the HeArt Gallery located at 43 Maroondah Highway in Healesville. The gallery’s mission is to sell local made artworks produced in the region, which makes it a great place to buy your holiday present.
