Kerang Information

Kerang is a rural town in Victoria situated on the Murray Valley Highway 279 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and 129 kilometres from Bendigo. It is a main commercial centre for Agriculture, predominantly Dairy, Horticulture, Lucerne and Grain with a population of nearly 4,400.

Kerang’s symbol is a flying Ibis the reason behind this is the proximity of over 50 Lagoons and Lakes where it is estimated over 200,000 Ibis breed each year, making it the most populous Ibis Rookeries in the world. The Lagoons and Lakes are home to thousands or other waterbirds such as Egrets, Spoonbills, Kites, Harriers, Grebes, Heron and Sea Eagles. The advantages of these natural wetlands and the population of birds are easy to recognise, as they consume at least five tonnes of insects per day, keeping the pests away from the crops on the local farms.

The Lagoon area has become a major recreational destination for Swimming, Sailing, Canoeing, Kayaking, Water Skiing and Fishing, along with Loddon River where you can catch Trout, Cod and Redfin, while 2 kilometres north is Pyramid Creek where you can reel in Large Carp as well as Yellowbelly and Redfin.

Standing on the Murray Valley Highway junction with Wellington Street you will find the Lester Smith Lookout Tower, which now the location of the town’s visitor centre and offers excellent views of the surrounding area from the upper floor. A short walk along Wellington to the corner of Victoria Street stands the memorial clock, built in remembrance of a local school teacher who died trying to save one of her students from drowning in the Loddon River.

With camping and picnic facilities surrounding the Town and Lakes, and nearby Leaghur State Park, which is a 1580 ha forest with an outstanding section of Blackbox and where signs can still be seen cut into the trees where the Aboriginal people carved the bark to make Shields, Shelters and Canoes, the region holds a wealth of historical and natural beauty for all who visit.
