Lorne Information
Lorne in Victoria is a small seaside town located on Louttit Bay with a population of about 1,200 people. Lorne is a popular holiday destination in particular for surfing and fishing. Lorne was named after Captain Louttit who took shelter in the bay in 1841 while he was retrieving cargo by a nearby shipwreck.
Fishing is very popular and there are plenty of beach and river fishing spots and boat charters are available for your holiday fishing adventure. Some of the best river catches include trout, blackfish and perch as well as whiting, flathead, snapper, salmon, trevally and garfish for ocean fishing.
Surfing action on Louttit Beach is another great attraction and there are plenty of waves all year round.
Lorne is surrounded by the Great Otway National Park, which is an environmental paradise. The National Park features a diverse landscape with plenty of wildlife. There are also several waterfalls and the best two are Hopkins Falls and Hopetoun Falls. Camping is permitted but only at Johanna, Aire River and Blanket Bay.
The nearby Cape Otway Lighthouse is another great attraction. The lighthouse was built in 1848 and is the oldest lighthouse in mainland Australia. Unfortunately technology led to the lighthouse being decommissioned in 1994 by a solar powered beacon located in front of the original tower.
Since 1993 Lorne has held the Falls Festival every year in December/January which lasts for four days. The festival now attracts over 12,000 people each year who come to visit the musical acts and performances.
An event not to miss in Lorne is the annual Pier to Pub swimming event held in January. The race is officially recognised in the Guinness Book of Records and attracts nearly 4,000 competitors each year. The annual event also includes the Mountain to Surf and the Lorne Surf Boat Race.
