Morwell Information
Morwell in Victoria is a city in the central Gippsland region with a population of about 15,000 people. The name Morwell comes from the aboriginal word meaning “Wooly Possum”.
Originally the Aboriginal people inhabited Morwell before white settlement in the 1870’s when a railway was built which led to a significant increase in settlement of the area. During early years Morwell was of great importance for coal mining in surrounding areas and today the primary industry still thrives on being at the heart of Victoria’s energy industry.
The Powerworks Energy Technology and Visitors Centre in Morwell is a star attraction to the area. There are interactive displays, education programs and tours available which gives an in site to the production of electricity.
Another great attraction to the area is the Morwell National Park located just 16 kilometres south of Morwell. The park is located at the foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges and makes the perfect place for a picnic. There is plenty of wildlife and fauna to see including rare orchids.
Lovers of roses will also enjoy the Morwell Centennial Rose Garden, which is labelled one of the finest in the southern hemisphere. Covering over two and a half acres there are more than 3,000 rose bushes to see and admire.
For people interested in Gold mining history, the nearby Walhalla Gold Mine is another great place to see. The tour will highlight the history of the Walhalla mine once being one of the world’s richest gold mines. The tour also features 8.5 kilometres of mining tracks, which is very interesting.
Golfing enthusiasts will also enjoy a round of golf at the Morwell Golf Club located in Fairway Drive. The course is set with spectacular views of the Latrobe Valley. There are numerous water hazards and bunkers to make a very challenging 18 hole game.
