Mt Martha Information

Mount Martha is located on the shores of Port Phillip Bay and marks the start of the Selwyn fault, a geological anomaly that stretches east to the Dandenong Ranges.

Dating back to the 1840’s, the area’s main operation was farming and many of the vineyards from the region still exist today. Its location is perfectly placed to tour the Mornington Peninsula, visit the historical homestead, ‘The Briars’ and venture along woodland trails through the wetlands. With Mount Martha Park’s 53 hectares of natural bushland and walking trails surrounding the 160 metre peak, there are spectacular views of the bay waiting for those nature lovers who make the trek.

Mt Martha also guards the southern reaches of Fossil Beach, one of only two exposed Fossil plains in the world, dating back 25 million years.

For those ramblers, there is a boardwalk that stretches over 5kms along nearby Balcombe Creek to the Briars Historic Park where a variety of wetland birds can be viewed from observation hides, after which, you can enjoy a sumptuous feast in Josephine’s Restaurant.

The wide sandy beaches exist in stark contrast to the surrounding rocky cliffs and bushland. The quaint brightly painted bathing huts depict picture postcard views of times gone by. Relax on the beach in a setting less commercial and more tranquil than most resorts around or delve into the beautiful waters of the bay and enjoy sailing, swimming and snorkelling.

For the more adventurous, you can discover the wonders of the Mornington Peninsula and nearby Phillip Island on a guided sea kayak tour. Alternatively, take to the air and get a bird’s eye view of the Melbourne skyline, the magnificent scenery of the Dandenong Ranges to the east and the beautiful setting of Port Phillip Bay in an exhilarating flight on a seaplane from Gem Pier. Wherever you go, don’t forget your camera to capture some of the most incredible natural countryside and bushland in the state.
