Myrtleford Information
Myrtleford is a small town with a population of just over 3,100 inhabitants. Situated in the Ovens and Buffalo River Valley on the Great Alpine Road, this rural town has adapted over the years and remained a major commercial centre for the region.
The main industries are Agriculture and Timber although Tobacco was an important crop for many years until the industry closed in 2006. Now, Wine Grapes, Walnuts, Chestnuts, Fruit, Vegetables, Hops, Beef and Dairy are the prevalent industries.
Of late, Myrtleford is becoming a major tourist attraction. Set at the foot of the Mount Buffalo Ranges, the town serves as the gateway to Mount Buffalo National Park, an area of incredible natural beauty. As well as an ideal holiday destination with Walking Trails, Sports, Historical Attractions, Fishing, Boating and Canoeing on Lake Buffalo, you will also find the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail where you can hire a bicycle and tour the wonderful Ovens Valley.
In winter, it is the perfect place to set up camp and venture into the Victorian Ski Fields and enjoy a range of activities.
One of the must see places in Myrtleford is the old Butter Factory situated along the Great Alpine Road with stunning views of Mount Buffalo. Although it closed in the 60’s the building now houses a unique Café & Restaurant and yes, they still churn their own butter.
With such a history of farming, it is little wonder that the town offers some of the finest events and festivals in the state, with Bush Markets, Agricultural Shows, and Rodeos to celebrate the strong Italian connection, La Fiera Festival including the stop over station for the ICT Trophy Rally between Sydney and Melbourne.
Whether you are looking for an adventurous getaway or a relaxing break to sample some of the finest fresh food produce and exciting wines, the Ovens and Buffalo River Valley region will excite or revive you ready to take on the world once again.
