Omeo Information

Omeo is a small Rural Town located on the Great Alpine Road 400 kilometres from Melbourne and a short drive from Mount Hotham in the great Victorian Snowfields. Although this tiny Hamlet only has a population of about 500, it still attracts countless visitors and holidaymakers eagre to base themselves close to the Ski Resorts.

The name Omeo is derived from the Aboriginal word for Mountains and as you will see, the vista from this town is something spectacular. Set high in the Great Dividing Ranges, the region is noted for its Magical views and History.

The sparkling clear rivers of this Mountainous region are perfect for Swimming or Fishing. Alternatively, grab a Kayak or a Canoe and sail blissfully through the still waters of the mountain streams or ride the white water as it drop level by level through the landscape on the mighty Mitta Mitta River.

Adventure is the way of the High Country, whether it is on the water or travelling through the Wilderness on one of the many Walking Tracks. The Touring routes are great for Horse Riding, 4WD or the exhilaration of two wheels, Man Powered or Horse Powered.

Step back in time to see the remaining Historical Buildings after two Earthquakes in 1885 and 1892 and the Black Friday Bush Fire of 1939 decimated the region and witness what life would have been like in the late 1800’s. Visit the Log Gaol and sit in the dock of the Old Courthouse.

Explore some of the remnants of the highest Gold Fields in Victoria and walk around the historical Oriental Claims and Livingstone Creek Park or visit the Sub Alpine Heaths amid the splendour of Snow Gum and Mountain Gum Forests.

If Winter Sport is more to your liking, you won’t go far wrong on the Ski Fields of Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Dinner Plain where Snowboarding, Downhill and Cross Country are the order of the day.
