Port Campbell Information
Port Campbell in Victoria is a coastal town on the Great Ocean Road. The township has a population of about 800 people and is a hot tourist destination for people visiting who come to see the nearby Twelve Apostles located in the Port Campbell National Park.
The Port Campbell National Park contains several attractions of spectacular limestone rock formations. Most come to see the famous Twelve Apostles however there are five other great natural attractions to see being the London Arch, Loch Ard Gorge, Gibson Steps and the Grotto.
The Grotto is a geological formation that is unique in forming a sinkhole. There are wooden steps that lead to the attraction and during low tide there is a quiet rock pool. The Gibson Steps refer to the cliff area where there is a natural staircase, which leads from the massive cliff tops down to the beach.
Loch Ard Gorge was named after the ship Loch Ard that shipwrecked in the area in 1878. The gorge is spectacular in that it is a place where you can see the process of erosion in action. The two unconnected rock pillars are named Eva and Tom after the only two survivors of the Loch Ard shipwreck.
The most famous attraction is the Twelve Apostles. The massive limestone stacks reach some 100 metres into the air and are a spectacular tourist site to take that wonderful holiday snap. In the recent years some of the Apostles have collapsed however the area is an ongoing erosion site and some of the headlands in the future will further erode to become new limestone stacks.
Apart from natural attractions, Port Campbell also features plenty of wildlife to discover. There are whales, kangaroos and Koalas to see and some fantastic nature reserves where you can get up close and personal with some great Australian wildlife.
