Sorrento Information

Sorrento is a quiet seaside township on the Mornington Peninsula with a population of just over 1500 and only 90 kms from Melbourne. During the summer, crowds flock to this mainly upper class seaside resort on the shores of Port Phillip. The area itself has a particular historical reference, Sullivan Bay in Sorrento was the site of Victoria’s very first European settlement, 30 years before the founding of Melbourne, although this was short lived due to the lack of fresh water in the area and the bulk of the settlement shifted to nearby Hobart.

There is ample to do as a visitor to the region whether you are looking for adventure or simply a relaxing break. The area’s robust farming and fishing heritage is testament to the incredible range of fresh produce and over 170 local wineries and 50 cellars.

The beaches at Sorrento seem to have been trapped in a time reminiscent of Victorian England with bathing boxes lining the sand. The popular tours in the region include Fishing, Scuba and the ever popular Dolphin and Seal watching where you can view the spectacular mammals from one of the local charter boats or dive in for a close up swimming experience you will never forget.

Dining in Sorrento gives you plenty of choice where you can enjoy the standard saviour fare of pub grub in the cliff top based hotel Sorrento, where the views are simply breathtaking, feed the Pelicans from your table in the old tea rooms at Bath House or simply dine on fish and chips on the beach.

Take a fishing charter for Snapper, Whiting or Squid or for the more adventurous try your hand at catching a shark such as the Mako, Blue Whaler or Thresher. Visit the countless boutiques through the township or get out and explore the outer regions past Olive Groves, Vineyards and Lively Local markets boasting the very best in organic produce.

Such is the diversity of the area, Tina Arena wrote about her memories of holidays there in her 1995 hit “Sorrento Moon (I Remember)”. You too, can build memories that will last a lifetime.
