Warracknabeal Information
Warracknabeal in Victoria is a wheat belt town situated on Yarriambiack Creek. The town is named after the aboriginal word meaning “place of big gums shading the water hole”. It is relatively small with a population of about 3,000 residents.
There are plenty of heritage buildings to see in Warracknabeal including the 1872 built prison, which is a popular tourist attraction. Other great historical buildings include the old post office and the four-story water tower built in 1886.
One of the most notable people born and raised in Warracknabeal is the famous musician and songwriter Nick Cave. Nick Cave is famous for the emotional intensity found in the lyrics of his songs and no doubt Warracknabeal played some influence in his unique musical expression.
A great attraction to see is the Wheatlands Agricultural Machinery Museum located on the Henty Highway. The museum houses a large collection of historical farm machinery and tractors. During Easter is the best time to visit as Warracknabeal holds the annual Vintage Machinery Rally.
The Log Lock-up built in 1872 is another site well worth seeing. The prison is built entirely of wood and was in use for over 100 years until a new jail was built in 1965. The Log Lock-up can be visited any time and gives a good insight into the pioneering days gone past.
If you are thirsty for more heritage, then the State Savings Bank on Scott Street is another great attraction to see. Built in 1907 it maintains the original Banking Chamber and displays Warracknabeal’s historical items and records.
Located just 2 kilometres north is the Warracknabeal Golf Course. The golf course features greens on sandbelt and make a very interesting round of golf. The course is 5,859 meters long and contains an 18-hole course with a par 72.
