Warragul Information

Warragul, in Victoria’s Southeast is the main rural population area for the West Gippsland region in the shire of Baw Baw. With a population of nearly 13,000, the town is bordered by the Strzelecki Ranges to its south and the Mount Baw Baw Plateau to the north.

Warragul, named after an aboriginal word meaning ‘Wild Dog’, dates back to 1877 and was populated after the construction of the Traralgon Railway, which is one of the great ways to experience the outback in comfort, travelling the line through to Melbourne.

The surrounding area is noted for its dairy and niche agricultural farming which has spawned a gourmet food industry for those food lovers.

If you are into agriculture and farming, Warragul boasts the premier Farm World Agricultural Show, which includes some of Australia’s most diverse ranges of Beef Cattle, Dairy Products and Horticultural Exhibits.

The town is also famous as the home of the Petersville Milk Products Factory, providers of all the raw dairy products for the Peters Ice Cream factory in Musgrove.

There is plenty to do and see in the area. Visit the Harness Racing club and try your luck gambling on the winner in sport of the chariot race, or try your luck with the dogs at the Warragul Greyhound stadium.

Take a hike through to the Mount Baw Baw Plateau or climb through into the vast mountain ranges south of the town.

For the more sedate travellers, challenge yourself on the local golf course and mix with the local wildlife.

If you have a bit more energy, try cycling the route of the Baw Baw Classic Road Race, with one of the toughest climb sections in the country. Alternatively, just get on your bike and explore the beautiful scenery that makes Australia so unique.
