Warrnambool Information
Warrnambool in Victoria is a big regional city with a population of about 55,000 people. Established in 1855 the city grew quickly in the early years due to the Victorian Gold Rush.
The coastline of Warrnambool is very rugged which contain many shipwrecks. The shipwrecks make some of the best diving spots in Victoria.
Warrnambool is a very popular tourist destination and attracts nearly ¾ of a million travellers each year who visit to spend their holiday on the coast. The Warrnambool foreshore is very popular with locals and tourists for swimming and relaxing on hot summer days.
There is an abundance of wildlife in the area in particular ocean life. Between May and August, whales come to Warrnambool to give birth to their young calves. Fairy Penguins and dolphins are also large in numbers along with fur seals. A great place to observe wildlife is at Thunder Point lookout in town.
The city also features the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens which was established in 1877 by William Guilfoyle. The Gardens contain over 20 acres of beautiful scenery and make the perfect spot to relax for a picnic.
There are always some great events happening in Warrnambool all year round. Every Australia Day long weekend, Warrnambool holds the Grand Annual Sprint Car Classic.
Another great event not to miss is the Melbourne to Warrnambool cycle competition. The event is one of the world’s oldest cycle races and was first held in 1895. The cycle race is held every November and Warrnambool is the finishing point.
For history a great attraction is the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum. Located near the lighthouse the museum displays a complete model of an 18th century port and features material salvaged from shipwrecks off the Warrnambool coastline.
