Werribee Information

Werribee in Victoria is a large city with a population of about 40,000 people. In the aboriginal language the word Werribee means spine or backbone. The shape of the Werribee River from an aerial view looks like a backbone so this is where the name originates for the city.

Holiday makes come to Werribee to see several attractions and one of the top attractions would be the Werribee Open Range Zoo. The Zoo displays Australian and African animals and as the name suggests is totally open with animals running free. To see the animals, visitors must book a safari tour bus which will take you all around the zoo and the trip is usually about 30 minutes long.

For more nature adventure in Werribee, tourists should visit the Victoria State Rose Garden, which is internationally acclaimed for its magnificent settings in Werribee Park. There are over 5,000 roses to see which are all grouped in different shaped pathways.

Werribee Park also holds the Werribee Mansion which is a massive Italianate style mansion built back in 1877 by the Chirnside family. There are over 60 rooms and the mansion is extensively restored with original artefacts, furniture and clothing of the Chirnside family still intact. In 1923 the Chirnside family sold the mansion to Corpus Christi College, which then was bought by the government of Victoria in 1973 to now be one of the hottest places to see in Werribee.

Just 5 Kilometres from Werribee at Point Cook is the Royal Australia Air force Museum that is well worth a visit. The museum showcases and gives insight to Australia’s aviation history. Guided tours are recommended, as trained staff will be able to explain the history behind the planes that you see.

Two other great things to do in Werribee include a round of Golf at the Werribee Golf course and a winetasting at the Shadowfax Winery.
