Wye River Information
Wye River in Victoria is a small holiday town. Although there are only about 200 local residents in Wye River, the town has three times that in holidaymakers on holiday at any given time. The township is named after the river that runs through the town and the river is named after the Wye River back in England.
In 1882 Donald and Alex MacRea established a farm in the area, which they named the Wye. Both were brothers and came from England to set up their new life in Australia. They also named the local river.
Wye River has some spectacular coastal views and is very popular for surfing and beachside activities. There is also the Wye River Surf Lifesaving club in town for your beach safety and security.
There are some fantastic rock discoveries to see in Wye River including ancient pier remains. The rocks provide wind-worn shapes and amphitheatres, which are quite fascinating.
Fishing is also great in particular rock fishing. There are some excellent spots all over Wye River and great catches include bream, snapper, salmon, trevelly, snook and leatherjackets.
A great activity in Wye River is to the Wye River Heritage Trail. On the walk you will discover the historic township and the trail only takes 90 minutes. It is recommended to take the trail during low tide.
Another good activity is to canoe the Wye River. Paddling down the river you will experience some excellent environmental scenery.
Bike riding in Wye River is also wonderful. There are plenty of cycle paths and it provides an excellent way to see the township at a leisurely holiday pace. A great cycle journey is the Harolds Trek that leads from the township to the water south of Wye River.
